Widow of W.S. Scott leaves nearly $400,000 to Cowley College Foundation

JoAnn Scott Newman, the widow of former Cowley College Dean of Academic Affairs William S. Scott, and later Earl G. Newman, principal owner of Newman Dry Goods of Arkansas City, passed away in late 2020. Through the generous donation of the JoAnn Newman Trust, the Cowley College Foundation is the recipient of $387,438.80 to establish Endowed Scholarships in memoriam of Mrs. Newman.

“The Cowley College Foundation is so grateful for this generous gift,” Dr. Kori Gregg, president and CEO of the Cowley College Foundation said. “Countless students are going to benefit from Jo Ann Newman’s foresight and the legacy she has left behind, not only for the college but across our communities as well.”

Through the JoAnn Newman Trust, additional funds were donated to the First Presbyterian Church of Arkansas City, Southwestern College, Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor, Ark City High School Music Department, Winfield High School Music Department, and the Ark City Area Arts Council.

JoAnn was born June 20, 1930, in Winfield, to Fred and Marie Johnson. She was a graduate of Winfield High School and received her college degree in Public School Music from Southwestern College in 1952. She was a talented viola player and provided private lessons with this instrument as well as voice. She married William S. Scott in 1952. Mr. Scott died in 1991. She later married Earl G. Newman who passed away in 1996.

JoAnn was a world traveler and an avid supporter of music and education.
