28th annual Tiger Skins/Brian Groves Golf Tourney raises money for scholarships

In honor of former Cowley College golfer Brian Groves, the 28th annual Tiger Skins/Brian Groves Memorial Golf Tournament was held Saturday, August 19, at Ark City Great Life Golf & Fitness.

Brian Groves (Class of 1998) was a member of the Tiger golf team before moving on to Southwestern College in Winfield. He was tragically killed in a one-vehicle accident in 2002.

Honoring Groves’ memory, the team of Jeff Shaw, Marty Moulton, Dax Shaw, and Brock Buckingham finished in first place in the Champ Flight of the golf tournament.

The first-place team in Flight A consisted of Aaron Sanderholm, Mike Sanderholm, Scott Camien, and Jessie Nunes.

The first-place team in Flight B consisted of John Merz, Drake Merz, Brock Merz, and Pablo Merz.

Brent Burroughs was the recipient of the Longest Drive Award, and Miles Abbey won the Closest to the Pin. There were 27 teams and 41 hole sponsors at the tournament. The Cowley College Spirit Squad and Tigerette Danceline members assisted with the event.

“It was great to be a part of another successful Tiger Skins/Brian Groves Memorial Golf Tournament this past Saturday at Ark City Golf and Fitness,” Cowley athletic director Jeff Fluty said. “This is yet another excellent example of the support and generosity of our boosters, community members, alumni, stakeholders, and staff within Ark City and surrounding communities. No doubt it was a record-breaking hot day, but the tournament was fun and successful. Thanks to all for supporting our student-athletes, the Brian Groves Memorial Scholarship, and the Cowley College athletic department.”

An awards ceremony and silent auction followed the golf tournament, while Creekstone Farms donated the hamburgers for lunch.

Corporate sponsors were Community National Bank & Trust, El Maguey Mexican Restaurant, and Union State Bank.
