Dan Spangler Memorial Scholarship

Dan SpanglerWanting to do something in the memory of her late husband, Dan Spangler, Jan Spangler recently established the Dan Spangler Memorial Scholarship at Cowley College.

Dan graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1950 and proceeded to attend Arkansas City Junior College (now Cowley College), where he graduated in 1952. He would later be named the recipient of Cowley College’s Outstanding Tiger Alumni Award in 1992.

“Dan liked to give back to the community and individuals in very giving ways,” Jan said. “This was a way to give back to the school and teachers that helped him along the way.”

The scholarship will be awarded annually to eligible Cowley College students and will be applied over two semesters. The recipient must be a Cowley County resident, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, and be a full-time art major.

“Visual art was something Dan thoroughly enjoyed,” Jan Spangler said. “He had a talent for it.”

Dan worked for and later owned the Dawson Monument Company in Arkansas City. Along with his design work on head stones, Spangler also dabbled in glasswork.

Outside of his work, Spangler donated his time with organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Kiwanis Club.

“He was always interested in helping young people and would have enjoyed being able to help students at Cowley through this scholarship,” Jan said.

The couple’s daughter, Denah, graduated from Cowley College in 1986.
